Dear Parents,

Our HPS Parent Academy is around the corner, this is a free event that we offer to our parents as an opportunity to come and receive free training is a variety of sessions.  The parent Academy will be held on Saturday, November 17, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  We are asking all parents to please fill out this brief survey to help program the sessions most valuable to you.  We will do our best to provide all session classes, they will be based on a majority rule.  Thank you.

Open enrollment begins soon

Open Enrollment 2018 - 2019 begins Thursday November 1st, 2018

The open enrollment period for new Harmony Public Schools students is approaching fast.

Open Enrollment for campuses statewide begins Nov. 1 and continues through Feb. 10 for students wishing to enroll for the Fall 2019 semester.

What is Harmony?

Harmony Public Schools is a system of exceptional PreK-12 college-preparatory charter schools in Texas, specializing inScience, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).

What comes with a Harmony Public Schools education?

The Harmony Public Schools system is frequently recognized as one of the best school systems in Texas for its well-rounded curriculum with a special emphasis on STEM education.

In 2018, six of districts received ‘A’ ratings from the Texas Education Agency on its annual state accountability ratings. The TEA also found that all of Harmony’s campuses earned a “Met Standard” rating in its 2018 STARR testing.

What is our enrollment process?

Open enrollment for Harmony Public Schools statewide begins Nov. 1 and continues through Feb. 10. Our application and instructions for submission can be found online or at any of our campus offices. In the event the number of qualified applicants exceeds the maximum enrollment at any campus, a lottery is held at the end of February to fairly fill the available openings.

PSAT/SAT Testing Day

Parents please be aware that if your child is in 8th-11th grade, they will be testing on this day. We ask that you please have your child go to sleep early, eat a healthy breakfast, arrive to school on time, and most importantly to Do Their Best!

Each appointment will be 7 minutes long, if you feel that you will need more time with a teacher, you may then schedule another appointment on another date. We hope to see you here!

Dear Harmony School of Innovation parents and guardians,
Tomorrow will be the first day of school and we are excited to see all our students back! Please help your child by encouraging him or her to come to school prepared and in the proper dress code. Remember that only clear or meshed backpacks are allowed for safety purposes. Students can be dropped as early as 7:15 am. Middle school drop off will be from the cafeteria doors and high school drop off will be from the GYM doors. Breakfast start time is 7:45 am in middle school and 8:15 am in high school. We look forward to shaping the future of Harmony scholars. Attached is the school traffic plan.

Time to enroll in clubs and sports!

It’s time to enroll in clubs and sports! HSI-B Enriched School Day schedule is attached for students to choose from a big list of clubs, teams, sports, and College Readiness and Leadership Program (CRLP) for mentoring. The schedule and the application forms were handed during the student orientations and are still available online or in the school office. Students need to fill out an application form for each club they want to be in and return it to club sponsor prior to the deadline. Upon club sponsor’s approval, clubs will start in September. Applications are due on August 27th. Sponsors might hold tryouts or set criteria for competitive teams and they will be announced to the students. Go Wildcats!

Summer Assignments

Dear Students and Parents:

In preparation for the 2018-2019 school year, teachers at Harmony School of Innovation – Brownsville has prepared summer assignments designed to keep students engaged in the practices of critical thinking, reading, and writing while also giving them a preview of the types of assignments and works that will be explored in the coming school year.

SUMMER ASSIGNMENTS

 

Field day Dress code for 6-12th grade

Field Day dress code: students be out of uniform and may wear: appropriate athletic wear (t-shirts, bball-like shorts or pants). Shorts must be appropriate length so no Soffees. Tank tops and sleeveless are not allowed. A towel, sunglasses, and a hat are all appropriate for outside. Sandals are not allowed—tennis shoes only.

Per our out of uniform dress code: clothing may not be: sleeveless, over-sized, tight, see-through, off the shoulder/large neck hole, shorter than middle finger tip length when arms are down by the side, low cut, have holes in garments, or have inappropriate graphics, play-on-words, innuendos, drugs, alcohol, or gang affiliation, etc. and leggings/tights may not be worn as the bottom garment.

  Follow all rules and guidelines for each ride / activity. Bring money for open concession stand.

 Students not in compliance will remain in the classroom during the day.

Calculator Update

Dear students and parents,

In our math classes in 8th-grade math, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebraic Reasoning, Algebra 2, Precalculus, SAT Math, TSI Math Lab, Calculus, College Prep Math, Statistics and Risk Management and other elective high school math courses, we use TI Nspire CX calculators. We provide these calculators to our students during school hours and we exclusively recommend that the students also purchase one for their out of school use. Below is a picture of how these calculators look.

STAAR/EOC Administration in April

Dear Parent(s):

STAAR testing time has come. In April, 7th through 10th grade students will take the STAAR /End of Course tests. We are confident that our students are ready. Students and teachers alike have been working rigorously since the beginning of the school year to master the skills needed to be successful on the STAAR tests.

The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR™) is a state-mandated test that measures the statewide curriculum in reading at Grades 3-8; in writing at Grades 4 and 7; in mathematics at Grades 3-8; in science at Grades 5, 8; and social studies at Grades 8. All students enrolled in those courses are REQUIRED to participate in this testing.

Satisfactory performance on STAAR tests is a prerequisite to grade promotion in grades 3-8.

The tests that will be administered in April are on the table above.

Several things you can do to help ensure a successful testing experience is that your student arrives on time, fully rested and prepared to test. It is also important to make sure your child eats a good dinner the night before, if not a good breakfast the morning of testing. Similarly, encouraging your student to do his or her personal best can greatly improve self-confidence levels leading to better performance.

Thank you for all you do to help your student be as successful as possible, and for all of your contributions to Harmony School of Innovation.

T-STEM

Texas Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Initiative (T-STEM)

Texas Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (T-STEM) Academies are rigorous secondary schools focusing on improving instruction and academic performance in science and mathematics-related subjects and increasing the number of students who study and enter STEM careers. T-STEM Academies are demonstration schools and learning labs that develop innovative methods to improve science and mathematics instructions.

Prior to the 2011-2012 school year, the only path to become a T-STEM Academy was a T-STEM Academy grant through the Texas Education Agency or one of the private partners in the Texas High School Project.

Beginning with the 2011-2012 school year, a second pathway was created. Campuses, using local or other sources of funding, that are implementing the T-STEM Design Blueprint with fidelity may apply to be designated as a T-STEM Academy. T-STEM campuses are designated based on a rigorous designation process. Once a campus is designated, professional development and technical assistance are provided to designated T-STEM academies to serve as demonstration schools and learning labs to showcase innovative instruction methods which integrate technology and engineering into science and mathematics instruction. Designated T-STEM campuses serve students in grades 6-12 or 9-12.

Dear Harmony Parents,

As a school of choice, we strive to give your child the best education possible but we can’t do it without your support. Regular school attendance is an integral part of your child’s academic development and progress.  We kindly ask you for your support, by encouraging daily and punctual attendance which will help your child’s overall academic performance. Please keep in mind that any excused, unexcused absence, tardies and sign-outs causes your child to lose valuable instructional time.

 

Here are some helpful tips that can help increase a child’s daily attendance

  1. Set your morning alarm early, giving your child enough time to get ready for school.
  2. Make sure your child gets plenty of sleep at night.
  3. Schedule doctor’s appointments after school.
  4. Plan family trips during scheduled school vacations.
  5. If doctor clears your child; Student may come late after a doctor’s appointment.

Harmony Public Schools’ dress code policy was established to create a safe and orderly environment, teach grooming and promote proper hygiene, instill discipline, and eliminate competition and distraction.  As we kick off the spring semester, we believe it is important to review these policies, which can be found on pages 16-18 in the Student Handbook.  Please make sure your child arrives at school in appropriate dress every morning.  Students will not be allowed to attend class until they are appropriately dressed and any missed class time will be counted as an unexcused absence.  Violations of these policies will result in incremental disciplinary action.
Some of the most common violations we are experiencing on our campus include students trying to wear non-permitted outerwear (hoodies, sweatshirts, jackets, etc), inappropriate pants (joggers, jeans, yoga/spandex, holes), and footwear (sandals).
The only acceptable items that may be worn over the school shirt in includes v-neck cardigans or v-neck vests in solid colors of navy, red, or black, or the Harmony-logo fleece that was sold in previous years.  All other items must be taken off before entering the building and stored in the students’ locker.  Classrooms are kept at comfortable temperatures, but if students are still cold with a cardigan, they may wear solid colored long sleeve shirts under their school uniform, or purchase some of the new long-sleeved uniform shirts from the front office.
Pants must be blue, black, or khaki pants/slacks and fitted with a leather belt.  Inappropriate pants include jeans, cargo style, yoga, joggers, spandex.  All pants must fit properly, be worn at the waist, must be free of holes/tears, and may not be rolled up at the legs.
All footwear must have closed toes/heels.  Sandals or slides are not permitted.

La escuela confía en el sentido común del estudiante y en el apoyo de los padres de familia para mantener este código de vestimenta. El padre de familia que elija que su estudiante(s) esté(n) exento(s) del uso del uniforme y/o de las normas de aseo, deberá proporcionar una declaración por escrito, como lo establece el Consejo Directivo, en la que se exponga la objeción a dichos requisitos, basada en criterios religiosos o filosóficos.

Notificación a los padres y estudiantes Si un estudiante llega a la escuela sin el uniforme o sin asear, se contactará a los padres del estudiante para que le traigan un cambio de ropa. El estudiante no podrá entrar a clases hasta que esté vestido apropiadamente. Todas las faltas a clases por este motivo, se contarán como ausencias injustificadas. La escuela se reserva el derecho a decidir y restringir estilos impropios. La violación a la política escolar sobre uniformes y normas de aseo, resultará en sanciones disciplinarias graduales.

HSI 1st Annual Color Run

Harmony Gifted & Talented Education

In accordance with the Texas State Plan for the Education of Gifted/Talented students, Harmony Public Schools will begin taking nominations for all interested students in grades 1-12 for gifted and talented screening. Anyone interested in the educational welfare of these students may nominate them for assessment.

Nomination forms are available at the front office, or may be downloaded below. The forms must be returned to the front office by Friday, February 9, 2018. Assessment will begin on Monday, February 5, 2018. For more information about the screening and identification process, parents may contact the school’s GT Coach/teacher.

Harmony Public Schools’ Parent Academy is an important school-based initiative designed to strengthen school, home, and community partnerships that equip families with the necessary tools to be strong advocates at home and in their communities.

The Parent Academy sessions are where families have the opportunity to build trusting relationships with school faculty, staff and community partners in order to support their family and scholars on the road to educational success, college and beyond.

We will have in-house session giving information on HPS Digital learning, Skyward/School Cafe, Bullying 101, ESL Student Support.

We will also offer sessions from organizations and businesses from within our community such as State Farm Insurance, Westlake Family Dentistry, The Behavioral Health Solutions of South Texas, It’s Time Texas, Texas Southmost’s College Recruitment Office, City of Brownsville Health Department, and the Cameron County Public Health Department.

Parents and Guardians please do not forget to set up your appointments for this important event. Appointment bookings will BEGIN on FRIDAY, JANUARY 26, 2018. Each appointment to speak to your child’s teacher will be 7 minutes long, if you feel that you will need more time, please set up a separate conference with the teacher/s. This can be done by emailing the teacher or calling the front office. We also have our Spaghetti Night and Art Auction, don’t forget to buy your tickets!

You won’t want to miss out on this delicious meal of spaghetti that is being sponsored by Golden Corral. It will be held on the evening of Parent/Teacher Conference along with an Art Auction. All art work is painted and drawn by our HSI students. Each ticket is $6.00 and will come with spaghetti, salad, bread and tea. Get them early as we only have a limited of tickets available. All proceeds will be used toward the Summer Bridge Programs for our very own students. We appreciate your support and hope to see you here!

If you are a fifth grader in the Brownsville area looking for a math challenge, “The Best of the Best” may be for you! “The Best of the Best” is a fast-paced, problem-solving/computation competition where students race to see who can correctly answer as many as questions possible. Individual and team scores will be calculated and awards will be rewarded! So join us individually or gather your team of three from your school and join us for this fun competition.

Current students attending Harmony School of Innovation need only to re-enroll through Skyward, Click here. If you need assistance re-enrolling feel free to stop by the school January 4th and the 5th from 8 am to 3pm. Staff will be available to assist you in re-enrollment process. We will have computers available for you to use. Please remember to bring any bill such as a utility, phone statement etc. to complete the process.

Harmony Urban Garden Brick Fundraiser

Harmony Giving Day 2017

Harmony staff, teachers, and administrators have spent countless of hours preparing our students for college and each year approximately 85% of our graduating class enrolled in a post-secondary institution.

But, despite these impressive enrollment numbers, far too many of our low income and first-time college students drop out as they hit financial and circumstantial barriers such as the cost of attending college, that has increased by 36% in the last 10 years. Harmony Public Schools has 5,033 graduates to date and is projected to have 11,686 graduates by 2020, current funding sources are unable to meet even the current demands of these programs. Clearly, additional financial support is required.

We are asking our Harmony community to consider going beyond educational efforts, providing even greater assistance to our graduates through generous Harmony Giving Day contributions to the Harmony College Fund. All your donations will go towards helping our Harmony graduates to complete their higher education dreams and achieve their career aspirations by providing additional scholarships and direct college and career support services.

Free School Meals for All Students

Due to the impact of Hurricane Harvey on the families of Houston, the Texas Department of Agriculture is allowing school districts located in counties declared a disaster area to serve ALL students (regardless of eligibility) a free breakfast and lunch until September 30th, 2017. Our school will be participating in this initiative, so we are pleased to provide your children a free breakfast and lunch thus allowing parents to focus on their recovery process.

If you have been displaced as a result of the hurricane or resulting flooding, please contact the school Lunch Clerk. Your child may qualify for free meals for the remainder of the 2017-2018 school year if he or she meets the state requirements. Should you have questions or need additional information; please contact your child’s school.
